BEYONCE'S SURPRISE ALBUM RELEASE AND RECEPTION
Q: Flawless? What are your overall thoughts about Beyoncé’s self-titled album?
E: I thought the vibe was very youthful, fun, passionate, introspective, and dramatic. The production was amazing and diverse throughout the different tracks. The content really got personal into Beyoncé’s mind, the Carter family, itself, Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s sex life lol whoa, and Beyoncé's desires in life and thoughts about her different relationships. I really thought a lot of effort was put into the album, especially the videos. I feel that the lyrics, on this album, were more thought out and more full of imagery than past Beyonce albums. Also, some of her singles gave me a Destiny’s Child vibe. I loved it.
J: This album is flawless! She has outdone herself and I’m so happy for all of the accolades that are coming her way. The production is great! There are some creative and artistic producers on this album and they created wonderful music together. I have not loved a Beyoncé album in a long time so when I listened to this album, I was amazed.
C: First off, the production on the album is the best I've heard on a Beyoncé album. So musically, the album is perfect to listen to all the way through. I think it is also her most relatable album, being a Beyoncé fan I like feeling as though I'm growing with an artist. I'm a little bit older and more mature just as a listener so I embrace this unapologetic attitude and transparency that she projects through her album.
Q: How does ‘BEYONCE’ rank among her previously released projects?
E: I’d say the overall album effort and presentation ranks higher than her other albums. The fact that her album is self-titled speaks for itself.
J: This is her best album yet! She took her time to create an album that was about her life and how happy she is. Her previous work doesn’t display such openness and a connection with her fans.
C: Number one, easily. As an artistic expression this album takes the cake. I think as a woman Beyoncé has found herself, her voice and her vibe so this being her best album was inevitable.
Q: What was your reaction to the surprise midnight release?
E: I was stunned. Epic. Innovative. Smart. Beyoncé is the ish. Only Beyonce could pull that off successfully.
J: I wasn’t that excited because I’m not a super fan of her. Social media was going crazy so I went to iTunes and listened to the snippets which made me fall in love.
C: Yaaaaas! I see you! I was more excited about the delivery than the album itself. The release came on the heels of the Scandal winter finale so naturally I was already a little turnt. I felt like Beyoncé read the entire industry and her "competition" the exact same way Daddy Pope ripped Fitz a new one.
Q: Favorite track(s)?
E: Mine. Blue. Flawless.Superpower
J: Well of course I love Flawless! I also love Rocket, Superpower, Jealous, Partition, and Mine.
C: Blue, Flawless, Jealous, No Angel, and Superpower.
Q: Least favorite?
E: Drunk in Love. Still trying to figure out how I feel about “No Angel” I’m on the fence about Haunted.
J: Being that I can listen to the album all the way through without skipping a song it is difficult to decide. But if Heaven plays I’ll probably skip it because it is so sad and can bring out emotions I don’t want to experience.
C: Drunk in Love (I don't get the hype), No Angel and Blow.
Q: Which song are you aching to see her perform live?
E: Flawless first if that even counts. Otherwise Partition, and maybe Rocket and XO.
J: This is hard because I want to see them all performed live but I’ll name my top three: Flawless, Blow, and Partition.
C: Partition and Flawless for the same creepy reasons. On the other hand I would love to see her sing Blue and Heaven, they're the two most beautiful songs on the album.
Q: Which alter-ego is better? Yoncé or Sasha Fierce?
E: Yoncé. She's the more grown, evolved, comfortable in her own skin and life Bey.
J: Yoncé! I wasn’t much of a fan of Sasha Fierce so I am all about Yoncé!
C: Yoncé. Why you think you keep her name rollin' off your tongue?
Q: Beyonce has received some criticism for including more sexual content on this album in comparison to past releases. Are you here for it?
E: I'm here for it! Whoo! But sometimes I have to force myself to ignore Beyoncé broadcasted her derriere while she is marries with a daughter. She still fine doe. I'm no prude though. If ya got it, flaunt it. haha
J: I’m here for it! It seems that once women reach their 30s, they don’t give a damn about what people think and are comfortable with their sexuality. I absolutely love that she is embracing who she is and is not apologizing for doing it.
C: Maybe I'm not as uppity as I think I am because I'm 100% here for it. More so because she is a wife and mother. Singing about sex when you're married is a lot more respectable than an artist who is here, there and everywhere and I think starting a family should't stifle a woman's sexuality. With that being said when I first listened to the album Partition was on repeat for 30+ minutes.
Q: Opinions on Beyonce as a feminist?
E: Umm. Yeah I guess so. She empowers women, but can’t 100% be considered a feminist because her beliefs and actions don’t cover the entire spectrum of social institutions.
J: In her position, she should stand for the equality of women; she doesn’t have a choice but to praise and celebrate women. Now she doesn’t embrace feminism in every sense but I like that she acknowledges the struggles of women and is using her artistry to make a difference.
C: Based on my definition of feminism and how I have come to understand it, she exemplifies feminism as much as she can without being the torchbearer for a movement that every woman should support. sn; I don't a gree with her being labeled a "bottom bitch feminist" but I could go on forever about why that's an inappropriate description.
Q: In your head, what were some three-word reactions from Rihanna and Kerry Hilson when they heard about the release?
E: Rihanna: Damn, bitch, really? Stole my idea! Shade towards me? What Imma do? Kerry Hilson: I’m staying home. I produce better. Where the memes? Leaving record label. Deleting my twitter.
J: Ha! This is a funny question! I honestly didn’t even think of a response from Keri Hilson but I’m sure Rihanna was a little salty about the release. So a three-word reaction from Rihanna: “Ugh…this b*tch!” Keri Hilson: No comment.
C: Rihanna: Back to Barbados. Blew my high! I'm on hiatus. Kerry Hilson: I give up... Why me, Lord? I could never! Where's the link?! Lemme get that! I better laylow.
