FLOTUS APPRECIATION POST
Michelle La'Vaughn Obama (née Robinson) our 44th First Lady of the United States is many things to many people. To young Black girls she's a beacon of hope. She's evidence that hard work, determination, and vision can take them wherever they want to go. To young Black professionals she's a reminder that putting purpose before a paycheck can open doors that elevate us beyond our wildest dreams. To mothers she is proof that you can be sexy and a role model at the same time. To wives she is a comforting example that greater rewards come after genuine sacrifice. She is beautiful. She is Black. She is dynamic. She is funny. She is inspiring. She is everything. She is the prototype whose life teaches us many lessons the most important being that we can have it all.
7 THINGS YOU MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN ABOUT MICHELLE OBAMA
As a public figure we know already know a lot about her. We know that she is from the South Side of Chicago, the product of public schools, an Ivy League graduate twice over, Barack Obama's former mentor and superior, and that she gave up a six-figure salary to help run President Obama's presidential campaign. But what don't we know?
1. She skipped the second grade
An ardent learner, Michelle Obama grew to be a fluent reader at age four and with her stellar academic foundation before grade school skipped the second grade just like her older brother Craig who is also a graduate of Princeton University.
2. She was Whitney M. Young Magnet High School's Class of 1981 Salutatorian
You've probably read that Michelle Obama graduated cum laude from Princeton in 1985 earning a B.A. in Sociology but before taking her talents to NJ she excelled in HS as a student leader. She served as student council treasurer and was inducted into the National Honors Society.
3. Her senior thesis was titled Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community
Fun fact - Michelle Obama is a real one. Before graduating from college she explored the relationship between Black alumni at Princeton and the communities they called home before arriving on campus. Princeton was her focus group but the theme of her thesis is whether there is a benefit of college educated Black people for the Black community.
4. She is the founding Executive Director of Public Allies Chicago
After leaving her prestigious corporate law firm where she was set to become partner, Michelle Obama began working in the Mayor's of Chicago's office of planning and development. This experience parlayed into her involvement with Public Allies, an AmeriCorps program. Always a woman with a heart for service she started and sustained the Chicago Chapter of Public Allies by guiding and training roughly 30-40 eager candidates looking to begin a career in public service. She regards this as one of her most rewarding experiences.
5. She loves french fries
Rumor has it that she wakes up daily at 4:30am to work out. Now, we don't know her schedule but we see the results. She is stunning in EVERYTHING and her arms make the best of us want to crank out a few push ups whenever we set eyes on her. But through it all she is human and her guilty pleasure is french fries. She is clearly health conscious and is actively using her platform and influence to encourage everyone to live a healthier lifestyle and putting pressure on local governments to make healthy options more accessible. Have y'all noticed how most public school lunches have changed since 2009? Her message: Let's Move!
6. Her USSS code-name is Renaissance
Since this is public knowledge now, her alias may have changed but still... isn't Renaissance befitting?! The renaissance era is pegged as the rebirth of interest in the classics. Now, if you'll allow me to be fake deep for a moment I think I know what Secret Service was hinting at. Renaissance is a period of growth and an newfound interest in something that had not traditionally been popular. i.e. Black women. She is the symbol of America's, arguable, progress and kicked off the Black Girl Magic movement before we even knew what it was. She is newfound validation for us as an unloved, undervalued demographic. The truth is we haven't been popular since, well never. But look at us now, through police brutality, institutional racism, misogyny, and patriarchy, she is a constant reminder of what we used to be and quietly always have been, royalty.
7. She took baby Sasha to a job interview
And guess what... she got the job! Of course she did, because Michelle Obama is not to be denied. Think back on the joke she tells about the man that wanted to marry her before Barack. Barack playfully stated that she would be a diner owner had she wed another man to which she corrected that her initial suitor would be the president instead of him. After paying her dues as a public servant Michelle Obama, now a mother of two, had an interview for an executive position with the University of Chicago Medical Center and was short a babysitter. So this go-getter bundled her baby up and brought her along. Baby Sasha apparently slept through the whole thing and missed her mama pull one of the biggest boss moves ever. Michelle Obama would later leave her post for help run Barack Obama's eventual successful presidential campaign. Well done.
Now, just soak up the goodness that is Michelle La'Vaughn Robinson Obama. *heart eyes*
